welcome to Share the Stage, an initiative focused on encouraging racial and cultural diversity in theatre in Canada.
Share the Stage is about encouraging diversity in Canadian Theatre. It’s not about quotas. It’s not about giving special preference to someone because of their race. It’s about finding solutions to inequity, and Sharing the Stage.
As an initiative, we want to encourage the hiring of people of colour in significant roles on the stages of every single theatre in this country, and at the same time, encourage diverse hiring practices behind the scenes.
Canada has become a wonderful, multi-ethnic, cultural mosaic. Time and time again, this has been considered one of this nations greatest strengths. And we are very fortunate to have many, MANY, incredibly talented performers from diverse ethnic backgrounds, in this country, who are more than capable of performing lead roles in any production, from Classic theatre, to new Canadian work.
This isn’t about setting quotas, this isn’t about giving work to someone only because of the colour of their skin, this is about sharing the stage. When you search for the best person for the job, you will find people from multicultural backgrounds. And embracing cultural difference can enrich your organization.
When the stage is shared, then we create a better theatre. When we create a better theatre, then we create a better world.
